Midvaal, Gauteng – The Midvaal Local Municipality has successfully completed the construction of a new screen chamber at the Savanna Pump Station, a key infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving operational efficiency and preventing sewer overflows in the area.
The pump station, which services both RDP and bonded housing sections in Savanna City, had been experiencing frequent breakdowns due to foreign materials such as rags, stones, wood, and metal entering the system. These obstructions caused significant damage to pumps, leading to repeated disruptions, increased maintenance costs, and reduced efficiency.
To address these ongoing challenges, the municipality implemented the Screen Chamber Project as part of its broader strategy to strengthen critical wastewater infrastructure and improve service delivery.
The newly installed screen chamber will play a vital role in filtering out debris before it reaches the pumps, significantly reducing the risk of damage and improving overall system performance. The upgrade is also expected to lower maintenance costs, extend the lifespan of pumping equipment, and minimise the risk of sewer spillages that can impact public health and the environment.
In addition, the system will make sump cleaning more efficient and manageable, reducing reliance on frequent contractor interventions.
The facility is currently equipped with a manual screening system, with provisions already in place for future upgrades to a fully automated mechanical screening system as infrastructure development continues.
Construction of the project began in October 2025 and was completed in February 2026. The total cost of the project was approximately R998,712 (excluding VAT) and R1,148,806.80 (including VAT).
The municipality says the project underscores its ongoing commitment to maintaining and upgrading essential infrastructure, improving wastewater management, and safeguarding the health and well-being of residents.
Midvaal Local Municipality reaffirmed that it will continue investing in infrastructure development to ensure reliable, efficient, and sustainable service delivery across its communities.
