The Emfuleni Democratic Alliance (DA) has revealed that, despite R50 million spent over a decade, a critical road infrastructure project in Emfuleni is still a dusty footpath.
Over 10 years ago, the residents of Sebokeng Zone 7 Ext 1 and Evaton were promised a tarred U-Road. Today, that road is an overgrown, dangerous footpath.
Because of this, the Emfuleni DA has launched a petition to force the Gauteng MEC for Finance, Lebogang Maile, to act against the contractor, the municipality and all involved.
Emfuleni DA councillor, Ayanda Ngubane said they demand accountability for this massive failure. “Criminals now use this road as a hiding place.”
“Almost R50 million was spent on this project, and despite promises, there is no bridge, no tar, and no progress at all,” he said.
Ayanda says, the Emfuleni Municipality says it has no budget to complete the road.
But in 2020, Maile promised that U-Road would be completed within that financial year, something which never happened.
Ngubane said, Maile must answer these questions:
- When will U-Road be completed?
- How was the R50 million spent?
- How much more is needed?
- Why was the 2020 deadline missed?
- Who will be held accountable?
“As the DA, we believe that accountability is non-negotiable, because R50 million has been spent, with nothing to show for it,” he concluded.
