The Vaal region is facing a significant economic setback following the closure of Vereeniging Airport, after the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) officially revoked its operating licence due to safety concerns and deteriorating infrastructure.
According to the Democratic Alliance (DA), the shutdown is the result of prolonged neglect and alleged mismanagement by the Sedibeng District Municipality, which is governed by the ANC.
Infrastructure Collapse Raises Accountability Questions
The airport’s infrastructure has reportedly fallen into disrepair, with critical safety components such as perimeter fencing left unattended to the point of collapse. This is despite a budget allocation for fencing and maintenance in the 2024/2025 financial year.
DA Sedibeng Caucus Chairperson, Sibusiso Dyonase, questioned how funds earmarked for maintenance were spent, highlighting concerns over financial accountability and governance failures within the district.
“The question residents deserve answered is simple — where did the money go?” Dyonase said.
Economic Impact on the Vaal
The closure of Vereeniging Airport is expected to have ripple effects across the local economy. The Vaal region, already grappling with economic challenges, now faces disruptions to business travel, logistics, and investment opportunities tied to the airport’s operations.
Small businesses and industries reliant on aviation services may be among the hardest hit, further compounding economic strain in the area.
Aviation School at Risk
In addition to economic concerns, the shutdown threatens the future of an aviation training school operating from the airport. The loss of this facility could impact skills development and job opportunities within the aviation sector in the region.
Calls for Transparency and Consequences
The DA has called on the leadership of the Sedibeng District Municipality, including the Speaker of Council and the Mayor, to account for the apparent failure to maintain the airport despite a reported allocation of over R100,000 and the awarding of a tender.
The party has vowed to submit formal questions and push for a full investigation into the matter, demanding accountability for what it describes as a “complete governance failure.”
“Sedibeng residents deserve better. This level of neglect cannot go unpunished,” Dyonase concluded.
