Midvaal, Gauteng – The Midvaal Local Municipality has officially commenced construction of a R47 million substation project aimed at strengthening electricity capacity and improving power distribution across the region.
The major infrastructure development is expected to enhance reliability in electricity supply while supporting future growth and demand within Midvaal communities.
Major Infrastructure Upgrade Underway
The project includes the construction of key components designed in line with Eskom standards, ensuring compliance with national electricity infrastructure requirements.
Key features of the substation include:
- Construction of a substation terrace
- Installation of an earth mat for grounding and safety
- Development of plinths and structural foundations
- An 88kV control room equipped with ventilation systems and safety signage
- 11kV switching rooms and dedicated load control facilities
Additionally, an oil-holding dam for transformers will be built to meet environmental and safety standards.

Full Project Scope and Delivery
The substation project covers the complete lifecycle of infrastructure delivery, including:
- Supply and delivery of equipment
- Installation and system integration
- Testing and commissioning
- Final handover of the fully operational facility
Once completed, the substation is expected to significantly improve electricity distribution efficiency and system stability.
Boost for Local Economy and Job Creation
In line with its local economic development strategy, the municipality has:
- Appointed 10 local SMMEs to participate in the project
- Created job opportunities for at least 26 local workers
Local businesses are benefiting through roles in construction-related services such as bricklaying, material supply, and logistics.

Skills Development and Training
The project also places strong emphasis on skills development, with local workers receiving accredited training in:
- Bricklaying
- Plumbing
- Plant operation
- Occupational health and safety
This initiative aims to equip workers with long-term, transferable skills beyond the project lifecycle.
