DA Takes Emfuleni Sewage Crisis to Human Rights Commission as Raw Waste Floods Boipatong Homes

Residents of Boipatong, Emfuleni, have endured years of raw sewage in their streets and homes, now the Democratic Alliance has escalated the matter to the Human Rights Commission.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Emfuleni has officially lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) over the ongoing sewage crisis in Boipatong, particularly in Winnies Park Extension 3, where raw sewage continues to flow into homes and streets, endangering residents’ health and dignity.

During an oversight visit on 6 November 2025, DA Emfuleni Councillor Ntombi Hlophe and her team witnessed the shocking state of sanitation in the area. Residents have been forced to live with pools of raw sewage flowing through their yards and roads, a situation that has persisted for several years despite numerous complaints to the Emfuleni Local Municipality and its water entity, Metsi a Lekoa.

“This is a clear violation of residents’ constitutional right to live in an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being,” said Cllr Hlophe. “Sanitation is a basic human right, and the municipality’s failure to act is unacceptable.”

The DA has since launched a petition aimed at pressuring the Human Rights Commission to intervene and ensure accountability. Despite the appointment of contractors to address the issue, no real progress has been made. Streets such as Sekati and Selemfe remain flooded with sewage, forcing residents — including children — to walk and jump over contaminated water daily.

The health risks extend to learners at Lebohang High School, located near one of the affected areas. Pupils are reportedly falling ill as they remain exposed to the unsanitary conditions.

“The DA will continue to follow up with the relevant departments until a sustainable solution is implemented,” added Hlophe. “The people of Boipatong deserve dignity, clean streets, and a healthy environment.”

The party maintains that Emfuleni Municipality’s ongoing service delivery failures highlight the urgent need for stronger oversight and accountability mechanisms. The DA has pledged to continue fighting for the rights of Emfuleni residents until proper sanitation and infrastructure are restored.
