The Democratic Alliance (DA) will visit Evaton homes in Emfuleni, Gauteng, where residents have been living without electricity for a decade due to failed transformers and broken promises from the provincial government.
DA Takes Action in Evaton as Power Outages Persist for a Decade
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is intensifying pressure on the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) over a decade-long electricity crisis that has left hundreds of Evaton residents in the dark.
On Wednesday, 8 October 2025, DA representatives will conduct an on-site inspection and engage with affected households who have not had electricity for more than 10 years due to faulty transformers that the government has failed to repair or replace.
Broken Promises and Unfulfilled Deadlines
In 2023, Premier Panyaza Lesufi pledged that all affected homes in Evaton would be reconnected to the power grid by March 2024. However, that promise remains unfulfilled –no transformers have been fixed or replaced, and families continue to live without reliable access to electricity.
The DA has accused the Gauteng Provincial Government of failing to implement recommendations made by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) after a petition on the matter was submitted by the party.
“The situation in Evaton is a clear sign of government neglect. Residents have endured a decade without electricity while promises are made and broken repeatedly,” said a DA spokesperson.
DA Leadership to Lead the Inspection
The inspection and community engagement will be led by a senior DA Gauteng delegation, including:
- Nico de Jager MPL – DA Shadow MEC for Infrastructure
- Kingsol Chabalala MPL – DA Emfuleni North Constituency Head
- Motseki Hlalele – DA Emfuleni North Constituency Deputy Head
- Cllr Isaac Motloung – DA Emfuleni Ward Councillor
The visit aims to highlight the dire living conditions of residents and hold government accountable for failing to provide basic services in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

Background: Emfuleni’s Deepening Infrastructure Crisis
The Emfuleni Local Municipality, which falls under the Sedibeng District, has faced persistent infrastructure failures, poor service delivery, and financial mismanagement for more than a decade.
The ongoing electricity outages in Evaton – one of the oldest and most affected areas — have deepened poverty, unemployment, and safety concerns, with many residents forced to rely on unsafe energy alternatives.
The DA says it will continue to push for urgent intervention and oversight accountability to restore electricity and improve the municipality’s service delivery performance.
Conclusion: DA Pushes for Accountability and Change
The DA’s inspection marks another effort to spotlight Emfuleni’s governance failures and pressure provincial leadership to take concrete action.
As the crisis stretches into its tenth year, residents of Evaton remain hopeful that the renewed attention will finally bring lasting solutions to their long-standing electricity and infrastructure challenges.
