Midvaal Local Municipality has taken a major step toward uplifting informal traders by investing over R8 million in the construction of modern trading stalls designed to restore dignity, improve working conditions, and boost local economic activity.

The project has delivered 34 new trading stalls, a fully equipped ablution block, and an administrative office to support day-to-day operations. Each stall comes with water and electricity points, as well as a secure locking system to protect traders’ goods after hours.

Improved Working Conditions for Informal Traders

For years, informal traders in the Midvaal Central Business District operated without permanent structures—leaving them exposed to harsh weather conditions, safety risks, and frequent interruptions to their income.
The new stalls mark a transformative shift, ensuring traders can operate in a conducive, safe, and weather-resilient environment.

Municipal leaders say the initiative not only improves the trading experience but also enhances the overall look and functionality of the CBD, creating a more organised and attractive economic hub.

Boosting Local Economy and Job Creation

Informal trading remains one of South Africa’s most crucial economic sectors. It provides income for countless families and creates employment opportunities within communities. By investing in proper infrastructure, the municipality aims to strengthen this sector and encourage sustainable entrepreneurship.

Midvaal officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting informal traders, ensuring they have the tools and environment necessary to grow, trade, and thrive.
