By Loxion News | Johannesburg

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has intensified efforts to improve living conditions for hostel residents, with Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara conducting follow-up site visits to six inner-city hostels in Johannesburg.

R500 Million Investment in Hostel Upgrades

The visits form part of ongoing oversight to ensure progress on the hostel revitalisation programme, which has seen over R500 million invested into infrastructure upgrades.

The hostels inspected include:

  • George Goch Hostel
  • Murray & Roberts Hostel
  • MBA Hostel
  • Denver Hostel
  • LTA Hostel
  • Jeppe Hostel

The project focuses on restoring dignity and improving quality of life for thousands of residents living in these facilities.

New Development: Rethabile Hostel

MEC Motara also confirmed progress on a new hostel development, known as Rethabile, which is currently under construction.

“We have about 18 months to go. The progress is steady, and I am confident that the contractor will complete the project within the stipulated time,” said Motara.

Key Upgrades Underway

The revitalisation programme includes major improvements such as:

  • Painting and structural repairs
  • Restoration of floors and walls
  • Glazing of external walls
  • Installation of paving
  • Upgraded bathrooms and plumbing systems
  • Sewerage infrastructure improvements

These upgrades are aimed at transforming hostels into safe, dignified, and habitable living spaces.

Community Cooperation Encouraged

MEC Motara has called on residents to cooperate with contractors and officials to ensure the timely completion of the project.

Some residents have welcomed the MEC’s continued engagement, saying it reflects a commitment by government to improve their living conditions—despite concerns about delays.

 Part of “Siyeza Nakuwe” Campaign

The visits form part of the Siyeza Nakuwe initiative, which aims to bring government services closer to communities.

“Siyeza Nakuwe,” meaning “we will get to you too,” focuses on:

  • Addressing service delivery challenges
  • Monitoring project implementation
  • Ensuring housing support reaches all deserving beneficiaries

Oversight and Accountability

The MEC was joined by senior officials, including:

  • Acting Head of Department
  • DDG for Human Settlements Implementation Phumzile Maseko-Seipobi
  • Project managers and contractors

The visits highlight government’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and improved service delivery in Gauteng’s housing sector.

Community Impact

The hostel revitalisation programme is expected to:

  • Improve living standards
  • Restore dignity for residents
  • Enhance safety and sanitation
  • Support urban regeneration in Johannesburg
