Emfuleni Under Fire as Millions Paid to Suspended Officials Amid Governance Crisis
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Emfuleni Local Municipality is facing growing scrutiny after revelations that millions of rands have been spent on paying suspended employees, raising serious concerns about financial mismanagement and accountability.

According to information raised in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature through Democratic Alliance (DA) oversight questions, the municipality has already spent close to R24 million on staff members who remain on suspension.

Most alarming is the case of a single municipal accountant who has reportedly received nearly R6 million while suspended since 2019 – effectively remaining on suspension for seven years at the expense of taxpayers.

The DA says this reflects a severe breakdown in governance and disciplinary processes within the municipality.

Residents of Emfuleni continue to experience deteriorating service delivery, ageing infrastructure, and inconsistent municipal performance, while significant public funds are allegedly being used to sustain prolonged and unresolved labour disputes.

The situation has also reignited political debate following recent remarks attributed to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who reportedly suggested that the governing ANC has “run out of ideas in Emfuleni,” a statement interpreted by critics as an admission of leadership failure.

Opposition parties argue that the ongoing mismanagement demonstrates an administration struggling to exercise effective oversight and enforce accountability mechanisms within local government structures.

The Democratic Alliance has positioned itself as an alternative governance option, arguing that it possesses the capacity to restore financial discipline and improve service delivery in Emfuleni.

As pressure mounts, residents are increasingly calling for urgent intervention to address what is being described as a deepening governance and financial crisis in the municipality.
